Configuring Vista for PPPoE
Q. I just bought a new HP laptop with Windows Vista and contacted AT&T Yahoo to find out if I could download the latest version of their software to install on the computer. I was astounded by their answer:
The AT&T Yahoo! DSL Software is currently not compatible with the Windows Vista. You can get connected on the Windows Vista using the PPPoE connection.
Can you recommend a website I can visit to learn about how to set up an AT&T DSL connection in Windows Vista, or do I need to wait for AT&T to produce a Vista-ready version?
A. It’s not the least bit surprising that AT&T (or any Internet provider for that matter) has been caught a little flat-footed by the release of Windows Vista.
Still, the fact that they have not created a PPPoE — Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet — dialer to install on a computer running Vista is probably a good thing. It would just be helpful if they could provide their customers with good information about what to expect and how to overcome certain obstacles when attempting to access their service using a new computer with Microsoft Vista.
The best solution to this whole mess is to just use an Internet router to connect to AT&T Yahoo. This would handle the log in and would also provide an extra layer of security.
If that is not an option then the good news for you is that Windows Vista has the ability to make a PPoE connection built into the operating system.
To connect to AT&T Yahoo! click Start Menu, Control Panel, Network & Sharing Center, Set up a connection or network. Here you will select Connect to the Internet and the hit Next.
Choose Broadband (PPPoE ) and enter your log in and password provided by AT&T and then hit Connect.
When you receive the message that the connection is ready then you’re all set to surf the web and explore the Internet with your brand new Vista Cruiser.

Don’t you still need the DSL “modem” to connect to the service even if you have a router? You don’t mention this. You can’t connect to a DSL service without a cable/DSL modem. A router is optional (though recommended for security and sharing more PC’s).
FYI the D-Link DSL-2540B here is both in one no need to buy them separate and affordable:

We love the ease of logging into our different email accounts using the AT&T version browser on our Windows XP computers. Since this blog started a year ago, has AT&T joined the Vista bandwagon to offer their browser for Windows Vista machines yet? I can’t find a download anywhere.
